Paje combines stunning tropical scenery with authentic Swahili culture. While tourism has grown rapidly, the village still offers a relaxed atmosphere where local fishing, seaweed farming, and traditional island life continue alongside modern beach resorts.
Paje is situated on the southeast coast of Unguja, the main island of the Zanzibar Archipelago in Tanzania. Around one hour by road from Stone Town, it offers visitors an easy escape to one of the Indian Ocean’s most spectacular coastlines.

A world-class kitesurfing destination
Paje is internationally recognised as one of the best kitesurfing destinations in Africa. Consistent trade winds, warm shallow waters, and a wide sandy beach create ideal conditions for both beginners and experienced riders.
Numerous professional kite schools operate along the beach, offering equipment rental and lessons throughout the year. The strongest wind seasons generally occur from June to October and again from December to February.
A beach transformed by the tides
One of Paje’s most fascinating features is its dramatic tidal movement. At low tide, the ocean retreats hundreds of metres, revealing vast sandbanks, tidal pools, and traditional seaweed farms where local women harvest seaweed for food, cosmetics, and export.
As the tide returns, the lagoon fills with warm, crystal-clear water, creating perfect conditions for swimming, paddleboarding, and other water activities.
Relaxed island atmosphere
Despite its international popularity, Paje has maintained its laid-back character. Beachfront cafés, boutique hotels, restaurants, and bars blend naturally with local homes and fishing communities.
