Modern comfort, tropical gardens and authentic Swahili hospitality just minutes from Kilindoni and the Indian Ocean
Butiama Bustani Hotel – A Peaceful Garden Escape on Mafia Island
By Mariam Karume – July 2026
“Some destinations impress with luxury. Others leave lasting memories because of the people you meet. During our first visit to Mafia Island, Bella and I discovered that Butiama Bustani Hotel offers both. From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with genuine smiles, warm hospitality and the feeling that we were not simply checking into a hotel—we were becoming part of a family”.
Nestled in the peaceful neighbourhood of Magemani on the west coast of Mafia Island, Butiama Bustani Hotel is surrounded by lush tropical gardens overlooking the Indian Ocean. The word “Bustani” means “garden” in Kiswahili, and the name perfectly captures the atmosphere that greets every guest. With only ten beautifully appointed rooms, the hotel offers a quiet boutique experience where relaxation comes naturally while remaining only five minutes from Mafia Airstrip and close to Kilindoni, the island’s main town.
Unlike many larger resorts, Butiama Bustani Hotel focuses on personal service. Every guest is welcomed individually, every question is answered with care, and every effort is made to ensure visitors enjoy the very best of Mafia Island.
Our First Impression
Neither Bella nor I had ever visited Mafia Island before. As we drove through the tropical landscape towards the hotel, we wondered what our first experience would be like.
The answer came immediately after we arrived.
The management team greeted us with warm smiles, while the hotel staff welcomed us as though they had known us for years. Check-in was smooth and relaxed, refreshing drinks were offered upon arrival, and within minutes we already felt at home.
Walking through the beautiful tropical gardens, surrounded by flowering plants, palm trees and birds singing overhead, we instantly understood why the hotel carries the name Bustani.
It was peaceful.
It was beautiful.
Most importantly, it felt authentic.
After settling into our room, we were invited to meet one of the hotel managers to learn more about Mafia Island and discover what experiences awaited us during our stay.
Where should we visit while staying here?
One of the first questions I asked the manager was simple.
“This is Africa tour links team’s first time on Mafia Island. Where should we visit while we’re here?”
He smiled before replying.
“That depends on what kind of traveller you are,” he said.
“If you love nature, swimming with the whale sharks is an experience you simply cannot miss. We can organise the excursion for you, together with professional guides. If you enjoy history, we recommend Chole Island, where you can explore ancient ruins and discover the fascinating story of Mafia’s past. If you want to relax, our beautiful sandbanks are perfect for spending the day surrounded by crystal-clear water.”
He continued explaining that the hotel regularly arranges excursions throughout the island, allowing guests to experience the very best of Mafia without worrying about logistics.
Can the hotel organise activities for us?
Curious to know more, I asked another question.
“Do we need to organise everything ourselves, or can the hotel arrange activities?”
“That’s exactly what we’re here for,” he replied.
“We organise diving trips, snorkelling excursions, whale shark adventures, fishing trips, boat cruises, visits to local villages, kayaking and guided tours around the island. We want our guests to enjoy Mafia Island while we take care of all the planning.”
For first-time visitors like Bella and me, this was reassuring. Rather than spending time searching for operators, everything could be arranged directly through the hotel by people who know the island best.
What local food should every visitor try?
No trip to Tanzania is complete without experiencing the local cuisine.
I couldn’t resist asking another question.
“If someone visits Mafia Island for the first time, what should they eat?”
The manager laughed.
“Fresh seafood, of course!”
“Our restaurant serves freshly caught fish, lobster, prawns, octopus and many traditional Swahili dishes prepared with local spices. We also offer international meals, but we always encourage our guests to experience the authentic flavours of the island.”
That evening we followed his recommendation, and dinner quickly became one of the highlights of our stay.
Fresh ingredients, beautifully presented dishes and friendly service reminded us that great hospitality is often found around the dining table.

What makes Butiama Bustani Hotel different?
Before ending our conversation, I asked one final question.
“Many hotels promise excellent service. What makes Butiama Bustani Hotel different?”
Without hesitation, he answered.
“We’re small enough to know every guest personally. With only ten rooms, we can offer genuine hospitality instead of standard hotel service. Our philosophy is simple—we provide authentic African holidays with European standards while making every visitor feel at home.”
After spending only one day at the hotel, Bella and I already understood exactly what he meant.
A Boutique Hotel Surrounded by Nature
The hotel’s peaceful garden remains one of its greatest attractions.
Colourful flowers bloom throughout the property while tall palm trees provide welcome shade during the warm afternoons. The garden swimming pool creates the perfect place to relax after a morning excursion, whether guests have been diving among coral reefs or exploring nearby villages.
Every corner of the property encourages visitors to slow down and enjoy the peaceful rhythm that makes Mafia Island so different from many busy tropical destinations.
The boutique atmosphere also means there are no crowds, allowing guests to enjoy privacy, comfort and attentive service throughout their stay.

A Stay We’ll Never Forget
As Bella and I sat beside the swimming pool during our final evening, watching the colours of the sunset reflect across the Indian Ocean, we realised that our first visit to Mafia Island had exceeded every expectation.
It wasn’t only the beautiful gardens.
It wasn’t only the comfortable rooms.
It wasn’t even the incredible seafood or unforgettable excursions.
It was the people.
The kindness shown by the management, the warmth of every member of staff and the genuine hospitality we experienced transformed an ordinary hotel stay into something far more meaningful.
Our first journey to Mafia Island may have come to an end—but thanks to Butiama Bustani Hotel, we know it certainly won’t be our last.
